VALERIO CASTELLO, attributed (Genoa, 1624–1659) ALLEGORY OF CHARITY Oil on canvas, 123.5 × 157.5 cm. Genoa, mid-17th century. Wooden frame with gilded stucco, decorated with racemes and leaf-motif volutes, 19th century. Provenance Noble family from the Marche region The painting depicts a complex Allegory of Charity, represented as a young mother nursing a baby, surrounded by numerous children in an evocative woodland landscape. The composition, of considerable size and remarkable narrative richness, unfolds through a lively interplay of gestures and child figures, arranged around the central figure in a dynamic and theatrical arrangement. The softness of the skin tones, the grace of the facial features, and the refined chromatic arrangement of the drapery—dominated by intense shades of blue and red—link the work to the Genoese painting tradition of the mid-17th century. The attribution to Valerio Castello is supported by the painting’s compositional and stylistic characteristics, particularly the liveliness of the cherubs, the delicacy of the emotions, and the rendering of the figures through soft chiaroscuro transitions. These elements echo the style of the Genoese master, who developed his art through his study of the paintings of Correggio, Parmigianino, Rubens, and Van Dyck. From an iconographic and stylistic perspective, a comparison with the depictions of Charity attributed to Valerio Castello—documented in the Federico Zeri Foundation’s Photo Library and in the art-historical literature dedicated to the painter—is significant. These comparisons attest to the artist’s interest in allegorical themes and the depiction of maternal affection, though they do not in themselves constitute confirmation of the attribution of this particular work. The work stands out for the breadth of its compositional structure, the balance between monumentality and narrative naturalism, and its ability to convey the moral significance of Christian virtue through an image of intense emotional engagement. The quality of the composition and the complexity of the figurative arrangement make the painting a significant testament to Genoese Baroque culture, within which the proposed attribution to Valerio Castello is situated. CONDITION REPORT The canvas was re-stretched in the 19th century; consequently, it is not perfectly taut on the stretcher. There are a few areas of paint restoration in the center among the cherubs, on the shoulder of the personification of Charity. Widespread grease deposits are present in some areas of the painted surface. The frame exhibits defects, missing sections, and old restorations.
