FLEMISH PAINTER, SOUTHERN NETHERLANDS, LATE 16TH CENTURY, EARLY 17TH CENTURY. THE TWELVE-YEAR-OLD CHRIST AMONG THE DOCTORS IN THE TEMPLE Oil on panel, 170 × 68 cm. 19th-century gilded and carved wooden frame with 17th-century elements. This large panel painting depicts the Gospel episode of the 12-year-old Christ among the Teachers in the Temple (Luke 2:41–52). The young Jesus, wrapped in a large red cloak, is depicted in an elevated position, surrounded by the Doctors engaged in debate and consultation of the Scriptures. The unusual vertical composition, the tightly packed arrangement of the figures, the marked physiognomic characterization of the Doctors, and the narrative style all point to the figurative culture of the Southern Netherlands between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, within which the subject enjoyed particular popularity both in painting and through the dissemination of engraving models. In terms of iconographic and chronological context, the interpretations developed within the Antwerp artistic circle are significant, particularly the *Christ Among the Doctors* executed by Frans Francken I in 1587 for the Cathedral of Our Lady and the compositions disseminated through prints derived from the designs of Maerten de Vos. These references should be considered comparisons of figurative culture rather than indications of attribution. The monumental and particularly narrow format could suggest that the work was originally intended for a decorative or ecclesiastical setting, perhaps as part of a more complex pictorial composition. CONDITION REPORT The support consists of several assembled vertical planks, likely made of oak; on the reverse there are three horizontal crossbars for reinforcement, believed to date from a later period. The painted surface shows widespread flaking and abrasions, wear, and restorations, particularly evident in the lower areas and along the joints of the planks; however, these do not compromise the overall legibility of the composition.
