SEBASTIANO DEL PIOMBO, 16th-century follower (Venice, ca. 1485 – Rome, 1547) CHRIST CARRYING THE CROSS oil on panel, 81 x 57.5 cm. Gilded wooden Empire-style frame with a band decorated with palmette motifs. The painting is a high-quality partial replica of Sebastiano del Piombo’s famous composition depicting Christ Carrying the Cross, a subject that enjoyed considerable popularity and of which several versions and derivations are known. In this panel, the composition focuses on the isolated figure of Christ, who stands out strikingly against the dark background as he advances toward Golgotha, bearing the weight of the cross. The decision to eliminate all ancillary narrative elements accentuates the intensely devotional nature of the image, bringing the Redeemer’s expression and suffering to the forefront. The prototype can be traced back to Sebastiano Del Piombo’s successful invention, characterized by the monumentality of the figure, the vigorous chiaroscuro, and the profound psychological intensity of Christ’s face—elements that contributed to the composition’s widespread dissemination through replicas, copies, and variations. Particularly significant is the collection history associated with the model: a “Christ Carrying the Cross” attributed to Sebastiano del Piombo entered the Borghese Collection through the substantial bequest of Pietro Aldobrandini and is mentioned in the 1626 inventory of the estate of Olimpia Aldobrandini the Elder. This work thus bears witness to the popularity and enduring influence of Sebastiano’s model, reinterpreting—in a more intimate and concentrated form—the powerful conception of the figure of Christ set against a dark background. CONDITION REPORT The panel has been reinforced with two horizontal crossbars on the reverse. Under Wood’s light, the painted surface reveals a uniform patina resulting from an old varnish application. No significant paint restorations are noted; however, two areas of paint flaking are visible at the top. The painting is in excellent condition.
