Giorgio Ghisi - Birth of Mennon son of Tithonus and Aurora - 1558 Description: As Aurora drives her chariot through the skies a woman, who has just given birth, lies on a bed attended by two servants. A goddess wearing a tower-crown with a statue of a woman hands the newborn baby to two winged children. Behind them a seated figure lights one torch from another, blowing on the flames. Signed in the plate: In. Iul.Ro/ Picta in/ Palatio/The/.D./Duc/ Mant./Georgius/Ghisi Mant/.F. 1558 - In a tablet: Quo genio exceptum te mater/ memnonis afflet. Subject: Design for the fresco decoration of the Loggia della Grotta in the Palazzo Te, Mantua. Normally described as 'Allegory of Birth' this print had an Italian inscription on the backside that gives more background to the scene: la nascita di mennone figlio di titone e dell' aurora. Dimensions: 27,80 x 41,90 cm Condition: Good early impression before the publishers address of Jolain. Completely mounted on a support sheet with some wrinkles and cracks in the paper.
