Herman Saftleven, Follower - View of the banks of the Meuse - Ca.1720 Description: This early 18th century's drawing is in atmosphere very near to the set of four river landscapes by Saftleven (1609-1685) later engraved by Jan Van Aken as 'Views of the Rhine Valley' . Our drawing is datable based on the watermark (Ecu Polonais, à fleur de lys couronné avec les lettres L V C) around 1725. It is also titled on the backside in old handwriting in sepia ink : Veu de cote's de la meuse followed by further two or three words hard to decipher. Very likely an original design and not copied after an earlier drawing. Dimensions: 19,50 x 27,50 cm Condition: Two small closed tear, one agains top and one agains bottom margin. Some foxing but in general very good. Literature: Watermark: see Maquoy Hendrickx, watermarks in the Iconography by Van Dyck page 124, WM 175 Medium: Pencil drawing with grey and brown wash Date: 1720
