Peter Paul Rubens - Woody landscape with a winding stream and a shepherd with his flock- c.1638 Description: An expansive wooded landscape designed by Peter Paul Rubens, with a winding stream leading the eye through the composition. At the far left, a shepherd has crossed a small footbridge over the water and rests on his staff along the riverbank, surrounded by his grazing flock. This depiction by Rubens was engraved by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert and issued by Gillis Hendricx. Signed and inscribed in the lower margin: “Pet. Paul Rubens pinxit. / S. à Bolswert sculpsit.” and “Gillis Hendricx excudit.” This impression is from the fourth state, bearing the address of Hendricx. The engraving belongs to the celebrated series of twenty landscapes after Rubens traditionally known as the Small Landscapes, a title that contrasts with the notably substantial format of the prints. Dimensions: 31,70 x 45,20 cm Condition: Excellent impression on wove paper, trimmed on the plate border, with traces of margins. A flattened middle fold and a crease, with traces of old hinges on the verso. Overall in very good condition.
