Anthonie Waterloo - The ruin - c. 1640-1675 Description: This atmospheric etching depicts the remains of a picturesque wall and arch overgrown with vegetation, traditionally identified as possibly Castle Brederode. A characteristic example of the seventeenth-century Dutch fascination with romantic ruins, a tradition wel known associated by Anthonie Waterloo and Jan Ruijscher. Ruijscher was among the most distinctive Dutch landscape artists of the mid-seventeenth century. His panoramic landscapes show affinities with the work of Rembrandt and his circle, while the influence of Hercules Segers was so pronounced that Ruijscher became known as the “Young Hercules.” The sheet is lettered “AW ex.”, identifying Anthonie Waterloo as a publisher. Waterloo, himself an accomplished painter, draughtsman and etcher of landscapes, was also active as a print publisher. In addition to issuing his own etchings, he acquired, reworked and published plates by other artists, including this etching by Jan Ruijscher. Dimensions: 8,80 x 10 cm Condition: Excellent impression on strong laid paper, trimmed on the image borderline. With lugt number; L.3869 and traces of old hinges on the verso.
