Koberger 5 Dec. 1488 printed in 2 col., capitals rubificated with un red. From the German edition of the famous "Legenda Aurea sanctorum" by Jacobus de Voragine with the hand-colored woodcut figuring a horse battle. The text on the backside mentions Charlemagne and emperor Constantine the great, both supporters of Christianity and the Holy Land. --- The Legenda Aurea is a collection of hagiographies by Jacobus de Varagine that was widely spread in late medieval Europe. It was probably composed around the years 1259-1266, with the text added over the centuries. The woodcut is old and period hand colored. The text is a crib/incunabula; a writing set with loose letters that was printed in Europe before 1501. This edition is early and dates from 1488. Dimensions: 8,70 x 18,30 cm Condition: Good impression on laid paper from the period. Trimmed outside the borderline. The woodcut has a very attractive outstanding old coloring.
