780 - Fragment of an ichthyosaur (fish lizard) in matrix from the Lias/Epsilon of Holzmaden/Baden-Württemberg, approx. 180 million years old, fragmentary fossil of an ichthyosaur ''Stenopterygius quadriscissus'', fossilized skeleton with head and beak, WxD: approx. 60/38.5/2.5 cm. Signs of age, missing parts/cracks. Ichthyosaurs lived over a period of more than 150 million years in the Mesozoic era and became extinct around 90 million years ago. They were originally descended from land lizards and only later became aquatic organisms. Their body structure is very similar to that of sharks and dolphins. Ichthyosaurs are said to have had an underwater visibility of 500 meters and reached depths of more than 1,000 meters.
