BJARNE DAHLQVIST (Finland, 1960–1969). Armchair with footrest, 1960s. Wood and leather. The leather on the armrests shows wear, and there is superficial scuffing on the wooden frame. Measurements: 100 × 67 × 76 cm (armchair); 56 × 57 cm (width and depth of the footrest). The set now up for auction stands out for its balance between structural lightness and ergonomic comfort, characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian design. The armchair features a wooden frame with a dark espresso-toned finish, supported by continuous cantilevered side legs and gently curved armrests with upholstered ends. Resting on a suspended fabric base are the generous dark brown leather cushions, featuring tufted button detailing on both the seat and backrest, as well as the matching ottoman, topped by an integrated, smooth-edged headrest that provides additional cervical support. Bjarne Dahlqvist’s work falls within the modern Nordic tradition, where structural integrity is combined with solutions geared toward domestic well-being. His design combines the geometric simplicity of bentwood with the tactile warmth of leather, resulting in pieces with serene proportions designed to blend naturally into reading nooks, home offices, or contemporary living rooms. Its condition faithfully reflects its age, showing visible signs of use primarily in the wear on the leather covering the ends of the armrests, as well as slight surface scuffs on the wooden base and a natural patina on the upholstery. The set is complete with its original footrest, a rarity on the market.
