Axe from Nicoya, Guanacaste; Costa Rica, 1st–5th centuries AD. Stone. Measurements: 9 cm high; 11 cm with base. Provenance: Family bequest from Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. An archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through purchases at European galleries and auction houses. This piece belonged to a private American collection, Q.A., Virginia (U.S.), acquired between the 1950s and 1960s. An axe carved from stone of a beautiful blue hue with ochre clouds, adorned at the base with incised geometric motifs. It comes from Nicoya, Costa Rica, and is dated to between the 1st and 5th centuries.
