Kota Obamba figure. Kota people, Gabon, 19th century. Carved wood. Metal inlays. Measurements: 58 x 17 x 14 cm. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. A figure from the Kota people, belonging to the Obamba type, characterized by its extraordinary geometric stylization and the rich ornamentation of its metal inlays. The piece features a large oval head with circular eyes in relief, a straight nose, and broad lateral extensions, decorated with thin metal sheets arranged in geometric patterns. Noteworthy is the meticulous craftsmanship of the parallel bands running across the face and the crest, as well as the characteristic openwork body in the shape of a rhombus, which lends the piece a unique elegance and sculptural power. The Kota, settled primarily in northeastern Gabon, developed an important artistic tradition linked to ancestor worship. These figures, known as mbulu ngulu, served a protective function and were placed atop baskets or reliquary vessels, called bwété, which held the remains of the ancestors and formed the centerpiece of ceremonies and offerings intended to ensure the clan’s protection and prosperity. The combination of wood and metal, the refinement of the forms, and the pronounced ornamental quality make these creations some of the most emblematic expressions of African art, whose powerful aesthetic exerted a notable influence on the European avant-garde movements of the 20th century.
