A SWISS 'BLACK FOREST' FIGURE OF A WILD BOAR, PETER BURI, BERNESE OBERLAND, LATE 19TH CENTURY carved in walnut in aggressive pose on a rocky outcrop inscribed to front 'PETER BURI', with canted rectangular base, underside inscribed in ink '27H', 20cm long Peter Buri appears to have specialised in the carving of wild animals: see another wild boar figure acquired in 1909 by the The University of Nebraska State Museum of Natural History: Morrill Hall (https://x.com/MorrillHallUNL/status/1646589074965241857 - accessed 10.08.2026) and one sold Gorringe's, Lewes, 12 September 2022, lot 251; also records of a deer in walnut exhibited at the Swiss 'Landesausstellung' in Zurich in 1883 (https://museum-holzbildhauerei.ch/brienzer-international/ - accessed 10.08.2026). Another Peter Buri wild boar may be found online stamped to the reverse of the base 'J. HUGGLER. LAUTERBRUNNEN', almost certainly for retail in the wood carving shop of J. Huggler in Lauterbrunnen (https://www.danielsantiques.com/all/p/black-forest-wild-boar-c-1900 - accessed 10.08.2026). Understandably this Johann Huggler (1861-1913) of Lauterbrunnen and Mürren, also a wood carver as well as a retailer, may be easily confused with the famous carver Johann Huggler (1834-1912) of Brienz, but records reveal they were two different people.
