NEOCLASSICISM TABLE CLOCK IN WHITE MARBLE WITH SILVER NEOCLASSICAL MOUNTS. VIENNA, AUSTRO-HUNGARY, CIRCA 1900. An elegant rectangular architectural table clock, fashioned from white marble with pronounced natural grey-black veining and embellished with applied silver mounts in the Neoclassical taste. The upper section of the front is centred by a circular gilt dial with Roman numerals and blued-steel hands, enclosed by a broad silver bezel composed of successive ornamental bands. The composition is rigorously symmetrical, with upright laurel branches flanking the dial and a pair of interlaced laurel wreaths above. Below the dial is an emblematic composition inspired by Classical Antiquity, incorporating fasces, a laurel wreath and elements of military trophies. The lower section of the case is decorated with a silver figural frieze depicting figures in classical dress interspersed with circular rosettes. The marble panel is raised on a stepped rectangular base enriched with silver friezes of garlands, beading and stylised foliate ornament. The artistic conception belongs to the late Viennese Historicist tradition in its Neoclassical expression. The combination of rigorous architectural structure, classical symbolism and flat-applied silver mounts supports a date at the turn of the 20th century, most probably circa 1900.
