SILVER CASE WITH GOLD APPLIQUÉ. FRANCE. 1880s. An elegant French silver case, crafted in the 1880s, representing a refined example of late Historicist goldsmithing. The body is executed in 800 standard silver and finely engraved with a repeating geometric pattern characteristic of French silverwork from the final quarter of the nineteenth century. A finely executed gold appliqué provides a striking decorative accent, creating a harmonious contrast with the silver surface while enhancing the object`s graceful proportions. The lid is centred with an oval medallion depicting a repoussé flaming heart pierced by an arrow and framed by scrolling foliate ornament. Widely employed in the decorative arts of the second half of the nineteenth century, this emblem symbolised ardent love, fidelity and romantic devotion. Objects of this type were frequently commissioned as elegant personal accessories or sentimental presentation gifts. The exceptional quality of the chasing, the precision of the engraved decoration and the sophisticated combination of silver and gold distinguish this case as a notable example of French decorative metalwork of the late nineteenth century. Functional in purpose yet highly ornamental, it reflects the refined craftsmanship associated with the finest Parisian silversmiths of the period. Hallmarks: French official assay mark for 800 standard silver, Swan within an oval cartouche. Dimensions: Length: 12 cm. Weight: 43.19 g. Width: 2cm, Height: 12cm, Depth: 1.5cm, Weight: 0.2kg, Condition: Good, Material: Gold, Silver, ID: ID-ANTQ-3741
