Self-taught, Thierry Colson discovered a passion for woodcarving during the 2020 lockdown. He carves like a jazz musician improvising a solo—at once cerebral and instinctive, passionate and impulsive—with precise and sure strokes. In this way, he transforms raw tree trunks, old roof trusses, and century-old beams into powerful, brutalist works that resonate with expressiveness. Thierry Colson’s sculptures have recently begun appearing on our screens (in television shows) and in movie theaters, and are also being acquired by galleries (in Italy and the United States) and by Parisian collectors who have recognized the unique artistic power his works exude. Each of his monoxyl sculptures is unique and arises from a dialogue between the artist and the raw material, frozen at a specific moment in time as an introspective reflection of the artist—a true communion between matter and spirit.
