Gotlib MARCEL GOTLIB RUBRIQUE-À-BRAC (Vol. 2), Dargaud 1971 Original illustration for the endpapers. Signed. India ink on paper 60 × 40.5 cm (23.62 × 15.94 in.) A magnificent illustration for the endpapers of *Rubrique-à-Brac*, which Gotlib created entirely on his own after Goscinny handed him the reins of his publications in *Pilote*. It features iconic characters symbolizing fame: the Statue of Liberty and the Mona Lisa, Botticelli’s Venus and the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, Frankenstein and the Marx Brothers, Guignol and God the Father, Pierrot and Superman, Guignol and Salvador Dalí, Napoleon and Newton, and then comic book heroes: Tarzan, Mickey Mouse, Popeye, and the Peanuts gang, Tintin, the Marsupilami, Gaston, and even—more cryptically—Berck by Gébé. All bear the face of Gotlib himself, which shows just how much reading about all these figures from art and pop culture has shaped him. A multifaceted self-portrait in the form of a tribute that pokes fun at the somewhat pathetic hubris that threatens every artist. Didier Pasamonik
