Xavier PHILIPPE XAVIER CRUSADE The Master of Machines (Vol. 3), Le Lombard 2009 Original cover. Signed. India ink on paper 50.5 × 33 cm (19.88 × 12.99 in.) Created for *Croisade*, the grand historical-fantasy epic conceived by Jean Dufaux and Philippe Xavier beginning in 2007, this cover encapsulates the series’ ambition: to use the Crusades as a backdrop where history, Eastern legends, and fantasy intertwine. This solitary knight, frozen in an almost meditative pose, embodies the tragic heroes of this universe. The exceptional precision of the linework—reminiscent of William Vance’s style—the abundance of detail, and the power of the blacks all reflect Xavier’s penchant for realism, which he embraces as a foundation before transcending it through fantasy.
