Whereas the game of seduction had previously unfolded on tiptoe and on a horizontal plane, the feelings that are now taking shape place the protagonists in the light—and thus on a vertical plane. Hence these first two panels, whose natural lighting rivals that of a spotlight that would bestow upon them a divine blessing validating their romance, punctuated by Charlotte’s smile. From now on, the other characters can recede into the background to make way for the budding couple. “The greenhouse we see here didn’t exist yet at the time. I drew it larger than it actually is, to make it a sort of cathedral that allows for plays of light and those immense trees that stretch out the large panel. I also really like Charlotte’s smile, with her flower-covered hat and big bow tie.” M.B.
