Bonhomme MATTHIEU BONHOMME LUCKY LUKE (AS SEEN BY...) Lucky Luke’s Long March, Lucky Comics 2026 Original cover. Signed. India ink, colored inks, and white gouache on paper 70.6 × 49.8 cm (27.8 × 19.61 in.) The atmosphere is dark, dreary, and ochre. The mood is oppressive. The blizzard, the snow, the wolves, the Daltons lying in ambush… Lucky Luke is ready to fire. Note the contrast the artist creates between the Daltons’ gaze as they watch for their prey on the right side of the image, while Lucky Luke looks straight ahead, as if we, the readers, posed a greater threat. This discrepancy creates tension that heightens the drama of the scene. “Often when I draw the cover for a Lucky Luke comic, I extend the image to the side. So the cover of the third album is an excerpt from this illustration. I mixed blue and ochre to get a sort of sepia-tinged gray. And I had fun creating high-contrast foregrounds—in contrast to the background—to anchor my drawing in the scene and convey that misty feeling of snow falling in the foreground.” M.B.
