Historical letter from Alfred de FALLOUX to his wife, Mrs. FALLOUX, in Becherel (Ille-et-Vilaine), regarding the Revolution of 1848 and the riots in Paris—"The Days of June"—following the closure of the National Workshops. General CAVAIGNAC’s Crackdown. “My dearest love, I have just achieved a victory that was very close to my heart. It is the definitive dissolution of the (National) Workshops, and God has allowed me to call for it in the very midst of the riot at those workshops. He could not have bestowed the blessing He grants me in a better way than by giving me this opportunity to do my duty; and, moreover, from a human standpoint, I can assure you that this does not expose me to the slightest risk. The movement is a conspiracy directed against the government and aimed at seizing power; it is by no means the result of the workers’ emotions, and no one has given a thought to those who have looked after them, for better or for worse. At this very moment, there are a few gunshots at the Bastille. CAVAIGNAC is showing great energy. BEDEAU is in command of the National Guard. The rioters are shouting, “Down with the Government! Long live the Assembly!” I’m sending you a kiss so that my letter will be sent and to reassure you; rest assured, my dearest love, that I am hiding or distorting absolutely nothing from you.
