Bulutoko ceremonial fork, Fiji Islands 20th century Length: 36 cm Wood and pigments. Reserved for chiefs and priests, this bulutoko fork was used to present food without them having to touch it with their hands. Although traditionally associated with cannibalistic feasts, its use was more broadly part of ceremonies and ritual prohibitions. This example is a late-period piece and attests to the enduring nature of this iconic form of Fijian art. Provenance: Auction, Paris.
