This beautiful chromolithographic print is from The Ornamental Arts of Japan by George Ashdown Audsley. 1st edition, published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, London 1882-4, This grand work has been hailed as the most beautiful art book of the late 19th century. It contains text and plates in nine sections on painting, embroidery, textiles, lacquer, incrusted work, metal-work, cloisonné enamel, modeling and carving, and heraldry. The beautiful chromolithographic plates, many of which are heightened in gold, are a tour-de-force in reprographic technique.
