It contains text and plates in nine sections on painting, embroidery, textiles, lacquer, incrusted work, metal-work, cloisonné enamel, modeling and carving, and heraldry. The beautiful chromolithographic plates, many of which are heightened in gold, are a tour-de-force in reprographic technique.
