PLANEIX François (1902–1956) Large “Carrelage” wool tapestry featuring an orange and brown checkered pattern accented with alternating stylized motifs. Woven on a Jacquard loom. Signed in the border and numbered “3” on the reverse. Circa 1955 (Signs of wear). Length: 237 cm x Width: approx. 152 cm. François Planeix was a weaver based in UZEL in the Côtes d’Armor region who joined the Seiz Breur movement in 1937. That same year, he participated in the creation of the Brittany Pavilion at the Paris World’s Fair alongside Jeanne Malivel, René-Yves Creston, Xavier de Langlais, Joseph Savina, Pierre Péron, and Xavier Haas. A copy featuring the design of this tapestry is housed at the Musée Départemental Breton in Quimper under inventory number 2013.25.1 and is considered to be François Planeix’s final work.
