Mattheus van Helmont (1623–1678) Alchemist Caught Reading in His Studio, Surrounded by His Assistants Oil on canvas (re-stretched) Signs of wear and restoration Signed lower center: MV Helmont F 41.5 x 58 cm A Flemish painter active during the Golden Age, Mattheus van Helmont belonged to a generation of artists who carried on the great Antwerp tradition established by David Teniers the Younger and Adriaen Brouwer. Trained in Antwerp, where he was accepted as a master in the Guild of Saint Luke, van Helmont specialized in genre scenes; he distinguished himself through his often humorous observations of the society of his time, depicting taverns, peasant interiors, village fairs, and laboratory scenes with particular attention to facial expressions and narrative. The theme of the alchemist enjoyed considerable popularity in the Southern Netherlands. As the heir to an iconographic tradition developed notably by David Teniers the Younger, it allowed artists to evoke both a fascination with the occult sciences and a critique of human illusions. In this composition, the artist depicts a scholar absorbed in his experiments at the heart of a workshop cluttered with instruments, books, and vessels, while several assistants bustle about him. The richness of detail and the liveliness of the figures lend the entire scene a theatrical and vibrant atmosphere. Expert: Mégane OLLIVIER
