PICASSO (P.) - JACOB (M.). The Siege of Jerusalem. The Great Celestial Temptation of Saint Matorel. Illustrated with etchings by Pablo Picasso. Paris: Henry Kahnweiler, publisher, (1914). Small quarto (225 x 155 mm), black slipcase, featuring an interlocking cube design on each cover, plain spine, title, author’s name, and illustrator’s name in gold lettering, gilt edges on endpapers, beige endpapers and box linings, cover and spine preserved, slipcase and protective box (Martin, 1966). FIRST EDITION. Printed in a run of 106 copies. One of the 85 printed on Holland van Gelder paper; this is no. 86. Written in Quimper and completed in 1911, this three-act play constitutes the third part of the Matorel trilogy. It “reflects Jacob’s mystical quest, and traces of his research into Kabbalah and astrology can be found within it” (Goeppert-Cramer). As with *Saint Matorel*, Derain refused to illustrate this text. Picasso was once again approached and produced three engravings during the winter of 1913–1914. A VERY ELEGANT CUBIST BINDING BY MARTIN, IN HARMONY WITH THE ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE BOOK. Cramer, no. 3. Bloch 25–27.
