BAUDELAIRE (Charles). *Les Epaves*. Amsterdam, *A l’Enseigne du Coq* [Brussels, Poulet-Malassis], 1866. In-12, red half-chagrin, decorated spine, gilt head, eb. (Contemporary binding). Partially original edition, printed in a run of 260 copies. One of the 250 copies on Dutch laid paper, the second paper grade after No. 10 China paper. The collection contains, in addition to the six banned poems from *Les Fleurs du Mal*, seventeen new poems. Superb etched frontispiece by Félicien Rops, printed on “Chine volant” paper, depicting a skeletal trunk symbolizing the decline of the human race and an allegory of Evil and Sin. (Exsteens, 465). The plate is accompanied by an explanatory leaflet printed in red, printed on the same paper. It was after their meeting in Brussels in 1865 that Baudelaire entrusted Félicien Rops—the only true artist he had found in Belgium, as he wrote in a letter to Édouard Manet—with the task of creating this macabre engraving.
