YVER (Jacques). *Le Printemps d’Yver*, containing five stories, recounted over five days in the company of nobility at the Château du Printemps. By Jacques Yver, Lord of Plaisance and La Bigoterie, a gentleman from Poitou. Final edition. Rouen: Nicolas Angot, 1618. In-16, 310 folios, red morocco, spine decorated with grotesque motifs, thread-bound, internal dentation, gilt edges (original binding). A collection of five days’ tales, in the style of the Queen of Navarre’s *Heptameron*, intended to show the Italians that French literature was not merely an imitation of their own. The prose tales are interspersed with poems, including a long lament on the miseries of civil war, a hymn celebrating the arrival of peace, sonnets, wedding songs, epitaphs, and a number of dance songs: Branles and Gaillardes from Poitou. The author, born in Niort in 1548, was close to Agrippa d’Aubigné, Guillaume Bouchet, and Noël du Fail. In his only book, he cites the signing, August 8, 1570, between King Charles IX and Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, of the Peace Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, which, at the instigation of Catherine de’ Medici, brought an end to the Third War of Religion in France, which had been raging for two years. The author’s motto: “ALL OR NOTHING.” A VERY BEAUTIFUL COPY IN ANTIQUE MOROCCAN LEATHER. From the library of the Duke of La Vallière (ex-libris: Ed. Petit).
