[MEIBOM, Jean-Henri (1590–1655)]. MERCIER DE COMPIEGNE. On the Usefulness of Flagellation in Marital Pleasures and in Medicine, and on the Functions of the Lumbar Region. A curious work, translated from the Latin by Meibomius, illustrated with intaglio engravings, and enriched with historical and critical notes, to which the Latin text has been appended. Paris 1792. In-12 (142 x 85 mm), blood-red morocco, broad gilt and blind-stamped borders on the covers, adorned with special dies, internal perforation, gilt edges on endpapers (Trautz-Bauzonnet). FIRST EDITION. A copy from Hankey’s collection, printed on large vellum paper, described in Cousin’s *Racontars d’un bibliophile* (pp. 166–167), bearing his bookplate with the motto “C’est ma toquade.” FIRST FRENCH EDITION of Meibomius’s text, first published in Leiden in 1639 under the title *Tractatus de usu flagrorum in re medica et venerea*. A German physician, “Meibom became famous in medicine for the discovery of the new vessels that run toward the eyelids and which have been named after him, the Meibomian glands” (Preface). The first edition of the work contains two beautiful illustrations, one of which is a freehand drawing, signed by G. Tex (Texier). The binding is admirably executed, decorated with motifs related to the subject and all the more rare for being signed by one of the greatest names in 19th-century bookbinding. A VERY NICE COPY, FINELY BOUND BY TRAUTZ. From the libraries of Hankey, Ch. Cousin (ex-libris), and Roger Peyrefitte (Jan. 31, 1977, cat. no. 146). Gay-Lemonnyer I, 807 and III, 1227 (for the first edition).
