FESTIVAL BOOK (Dijon, 1656). The Triumphant Arms of His Highness, the Duke of Espernon. On the occasion of his triumphant entry into the city of Dijon on the eighth day of May 1656. Dijon: Ph. Chavance, 1656. Small folio (31.2 x 20.3 cm), contemporary ivory-colored vellum. A superb and very rare first edition of this account of the entry into Dijon by Bernard de Nogaret, Duke of Epernon and governor of Burgundy from 1654 to 1660. This account of the entry is extremely rare; Brunet makes no mention of it. It is illustrated with a frontispiece title page, a title vignette, 2 engravings in the text, 8 full-page plates, and 8 separate plates (some folded): triumphal arches, columns, allegorical figures, and finally a beautiful and curious plate depicting fireworks, engraved by Mathieu after Godran. This work was produced by Bénigne Grignette, “attorney at the Parliament & Alderman of the city of Dijon,” in collaboration with Jean Godran, also an attorney in the city, who drew the architectural elements of the festival. A superb copy in its original ivory-colored vellum, perfectly preserved, from the Hipp. Destailleur library (1891 auction, no. 254 (note on the flyleaf)). Barbier, 277. Brunet, Suppl. I, 61. Vinet, 784. Ruggieri, 486. Berlin 2997.
