274 - Charles Catteau

Charles Catteau Vase Ceramic vase decorated with grape clusters. Yellow and black slip glaze on a white crackled background. Marked "B.F.K. La Louvière Belgium. Ch. Catteau" H 30 cm The grape, a traditional motif in decorative ceramics, becomes in Charles Catteau’s work a pure interplay of forms: bunches reduced to outlined circles, geometricized leaves, and sharp contrasts between yellow, black, and crackled white. The “raised” decoration, where the glaze is applied in relief, gives the surface a tactile depth characteristic of Keramis production from the interwar period.
