Garouste & Bonetti, *Clip Side Down* vase, c. 1985 The *Clip Side Down* vase is one of the first designs conceived by the duo Garouste & Bonetti. This piece, crafted from terracotta with a partial black glaze, was produced in an edition of approximately ten examples for the gallery *En Attendant les Barbares*. Signed: "B.G." and with the monogram of the gallery "En Attendant les Barbares." Dimensions: 43 x 17.5 cm (17 x 6 ¾ in) Biography: Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti—one of the most celebrated design duos of the 1980s and 1990s—reached a major milestone in their careers as early as 1981 while working with the firm Maison Jansen. Within this institution of classic interior design, they introduced pieces that were simultaneously precious and primitive, giving rise to what became known as the "Barbare" (barbarian) style. The designers went on to collaborate with the fashion house Christian Lacroix, as well as the galleries Néotù, *En Attendant les Barbares*, and David Gill. Over the course of twenty years, they created some of the most iconic works of the second half of the 20th century, such as the *Barbare* chair, the *Masque* lamp, and the *Lune* lamp. The early 2000s marked the end of their partnership; thereafter, Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti continued their careers independently.
