Romain les Bains Victoire 3 Stoneware, glaze One-of-a-kind piece 2023 H28 L40 D18 cm Victoire (2023) is a series of sculptures by Romain les Bains that interprets two symbols of triumph: the trophy and the laurel wreath. The body is shaped and then distorted on the potter’s wheel. The handles are added next; each leaf, modeled by hand, is attached to them. It is meticulous work. There is nothing triumphant about this “victory.” The forms sag; the glaze, laden with mineral oxides, gives the surface a charred appearance. Battered, collapsed, and scorched, it remains a victory: that of imperfection rather than the top step of the podium. Photo credit: Anthony Girard
