A pastoral romance: cherry picking. A large, vertically composed canvas depicting a lively bucolic scene featuring three figures in a wooded landscape. In the foreground is a young shepherdess seated, wearing a laced bodice and a pink dress. At her feet rests a wicker basket filled with flowers and cherries. Two sheep—one standing and the other lying down—occupy the lower right portion of the composition. In the middle ground, a young woman standing, dressed in a blue bodice, an ochre skirt, and a white apron, looks up at a young man perched on a ladder, busy picking cherries. Several sheep are grazing in the background on the left. Signed and dated lower left: Nicolas II Henry de Gray, 1816. Canvas presented unframed. Oil on canvas. French School. Date: 19th century.
