KIRCH, JOHANNES Cologne Title: Small Iron and Brass Coin Scales. Date: ca. the 1760s. Material: A box made of pear wood. Iron scales with brass pans and green cords. Brass weights. Dimensions: 3 x 14 x 6 cm. Mark: On the inside of the lid, inscribed on the steel engraving: “Recht abgezogen wage und Gewicht macht Meister Joannes Kirch wohnet in der Klein bolt (...) in der (...) Cöllen.” Description: A rectangular box with ornamental embossed and engraved decoration. The drawer contains 8 weights with coin designs, marked in black ink, and the lid, beneath a slipcase, contains a further 8 weights, including 2 calibration weights. The beam scales feature one round and one triangular weighing pan.
