CHINA Title: Porcelain Pot with the Large Prussian Coat of Arms. Date: China, ca. 1800 (Qing Dynasty). Material: Porcelain, decorated with colors and gold. Dimensions: Height 25 cm. Description: A tall cylindrical body with a long tubular spout and a twisted handle shaped like a flower bud. The highly domed lid features a finial in the shape of a lychee fruit. The large Prussian coat of arms is depicted on both sides of the body, while the lid bears, in contrast, the Prussian eagle with the monogram “FR” for Fredericus Rex The decoration on this jug resembles that of pieces from a gift set featuring the large state coat of arms of King Frederick II of Prussia. In 1751, King Frederick II founded the “Royal Prussian Asian Company of Emden” to import rare and precious goods such as porcelain, tea, and silk from China and India. As a token of gratitude to its founder, the trading company commissioned a table service in China bearing the Royal Prussian coat of arms, which was scheduled to arrive at the port of Emden in 1755 aboard the ship “Prinz von Preussen.” However, as the ship ran aground before reaching its destination, a large portion of the service was destroyed and could no longer be delivered to its intended recipient. Consequently, all the pieces were auctioned off in Emden in 1764. Parts of this service are now held, among others, in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the Haus Doorn collection. The jug shown here probably did not originate from this service, as it was produced at a later date. However, it may well be a piece of export porcelain that was commissioned as a subsequent delivery in the period following the first gift service.
