MEISSEN Title: Double-Handled Porcelain Beaker with Gold-Etched Chinoiserie Motifs. Date: ca. 1730. Designer: Decor by Abraham Seuter (attributed), Augsburg. Material: Porcelain, gold-etched decoration. Dimensions: Height 8 cm. Mark: Potter’s number on the base. Description: A bell-shaped body with a slightly flared rim on a short base. Handles attached to the sides, partially in relief. Decorated on both sides with large-scale, finely etched Chinoiserie scenes flanked by trees on ornamental consoles. On one side, a depiction of a painter with a palette and brush, in front of whom stands a servant holding an unrolled canvas. On the other side, in the center, is a smoking vessel on a tall, altar-like base, flanked by two kneeling or praying Chinese figures and a standing figure with a serving tray. The interior sides are gilded. The scene featuring the painter is a variation on the depiction on the lower bowl signed by Abraham Seuter from the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. This shows a Chinese man writing on a board, modeled after the cup painted by Johann Gregorius Höroldt. A similar double-handled cup, also featuring a painter’s scene on one side and a scene of adoration on the other, comes from the former collection of Ernst Schneider and is now part of the Schloss Lustheim collection.
