MEISSEN Title: Porcelain Coffee Set with Hand-Painted Decoration and Grapevine Relief. Date: ca. 1740/1760. Designer: Decor by Johann Friedrich Metzsch (attributed). Material: Porcelain, decorated with colors and gold. Mark: Swords mark painted blue under glaze, one gilder’s number (saucer), one incised mark (coffee pot), partial incised number. Description: Large pear-shaped coffee pot with a relief-decorated J-shaped handle, a cantilevered spout, and a domed lid. Milk jug in the same shape with a flat lid. Large round sugar bowl with straight sides. Hemispherical tea bowls with matching saucers. The outer surfaces of all the pieces are decorated with relief-embossed, polychrome-painted vines and grapes. The rims are adorned with recurring motifs of floral garlands, latticework, and fan-like ornaments. The saucers and the quatrefoil bowl feature lavish bouquets of flowers in a vibrant color palette characteristic of Bayreuth house painting.
