KERKELOO, JACOB Amsterdam Title: Walnut Grandfather Clock with a Ship Automaton. Date: ca. 1760. Material: Walnut and burr walnut, veneered and inlaid. With figurative inlays. Dimensions: 288 x 60 x 18 cm. Mark: Inscribed on the chapter ring: “Jacob Kerkeloo Amsterdam” (lived ca. 1715–1783). Description: Single-door pendulum case with a bombé base resting on claw feet. The top features a stepped cornice and is crowned by a figure of Atlas, flanked by two angels with trumpets. The glazed front is flanked by two columns with brass capitals. The front panel is painted in polychrome, with angels and cupids in the spandrels. In the lunettes, an automaton depicting sailing ships rocking back and forth on choppy seas, linked to the lever movement via a connecting mechanism. Silver-plated chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and Arabic minute numerals. Small seconds at the 12 o’clock position, date display at the 6 o’clock position, and the alarm disc in the center.
