FRANTZ PETER BUNDSEN OR JOHANN DANIEL CONRAD BUNDSEN Hanover Title: PAIR OF EXCEPTIONAL SILVER GEORGE III LIDDED BOWLS FEATURING THE BRITISH ROYAL COAT OF ARMS. Date: Presumably ca. 1794. Material: Silver. Total weight ca. 2,915 g. Dimensions: Height of each 19 cm, width 26 cm. Description: Each bowl has a flat base and handles on the sides. On the reverse side, there is a large engraving of the British royal coat of arms from the Hanoverian era, featuring the Order of the Garter and the motto “Dieu et mon droit.” The two lids have a wide, fluted rim. The raised center features another heraldic engraving, and the lid finial is crafted in the form of a fully three-dimensional lion with a heraldic lambel atop a crown, serving as the royal crest. Hallmark from Hanover’s Old Town with the number 13 (Scheffler, Lower Saxony No. 1385), date letter E. Maker’s mark: Frantz Peter Bundsen or Johann Daniel Conrad Bundsen (the former active 1754–1795, court goldsmith from 1770, ibid., no. 1376. His son served as court goldsmith from 1796 and went bankrupt in 1816, ibid., no. 70). Each individual piece bears an engraved number: N:1, N:2, N:3, N:4. Frantz Peter Bundsen and his son Johann Daniel Conrad Bundsen, as court goldsmiths, were certainly not only involved in the magnificent “Service A” for George III, but also produced other ceremonial silverware for the British-Hanoverian royal family. In the case of these tureens as well, the heraldic decoration suggests a direct link to the court. The two lions on the lids wear a tournament collar, known as a “label,” around their necks as a heraldic emblem. However, this does not refer to George III himself as the recipient of the tureens, but rather to the Prince of Wales, whose coat of arms differed from that of his father by a three-lobed label. The pieces may therefore have been made for George Augustus Frederick, the future King George IV (1820–1830). This is further supported by the fact that, as Prince of Wales until 1801, he still bore the older British-Hanoverian coat of arms featuring the fields of England/Scotland—France—Ireland—Hanover.
