LUIGI CHERUBINO HARTMANN The Four Seasons Four oil-on-canvas paintings, 71x95.5 cm; signed. A rare and reclusive painter compared to his peers active in Lombardy and Piedmont during the nineteenth century, Luigi Cherubino Hartman was born on December 11, 1807, in Chiavenna, in the province of Sondrio. It is likely that his first introduction to painting came from his godfather, the painter Giovanni Hüdener of Undereggen, near St. Gallen. Around 1830, he studied and honed his skills at the Brera Academy in Milan. Subsequently, the municipality of Chiavenna funded his advanced studies in Rome, supporting him with a financial grant. In Rome, the artistic innovations that had developed in the wake of the Restoration were shifting toward the revival of a pictorial vocabulary capable of embodying the stylistic elements of an archetypal beauty—a legacy of Raphael’s great legacy and Giotto’s conception of the organic simplification of spaces— brought to life by figures characterized by a disarming communicative simplicity. Hartman’s encounter with Roman purism marked a natural evolution in the artistic profile of the painter from Chiavenna: this cultural movement left a profound mark on him and accompanied him throughout his career as a decorator and fresco painter during his many commissions to decorate parish churches and basilicas in northern Italy. The artist’s body of work, in fact, is linked almost exclusively to places of worship in Piedmont and Lombardy, where he proved himself a refined interpreter of devotional painting—clear and free from compositional and chromatic heaviness. The works under consideration, previously unpublished, therefore represent a fundamental addition to Hartman’s catalog, essential for a broader and more complete understanding of the painter’s qualities. This is a series of four canvases depicting allegories of the seasons, each featuring a female figure at the center of the composition, identified by the typical attributes of the season she represents: grape clusters for autumn, a sickle and ears of wheat for summer, lush flowers for spring, and, for winter—the boldest allegory—a young lute player who, standing before a hearth, gazes at her reflection while holding a mask. The value of these works is enhanced by the artist’s signature on every canvas, further underscoring the uniqueness of the entire cycle.
