360 - Stereoscopic views of the Niagara River and Falls in North America. 1890–1908. 41 albumen and silver prints, 9 x 18 cm, mounted on cardboard; publisher credits and captions on the front, additional text on the back. Housed in a book-shaped box. Views of the river and the spectacular Niagara Falls in all seasons. Includes two rare views of tightrope walkers: Clifford Calverley pushing his wheelbarrow along the wire over Niagara’s Whirlpool Rapids. And Samuel John Dixon crossing Niagara Falls, photographed by George Barker (1844–1894). S. J. Dixon was a studio photographer in Toronto in the 1880s. In 1890, on his way to a meeting of the Photographers’ Association of America in Washington, his train passed over the bridge next to the wire installed there by the acrobat Blondin, who first crossed Niagara Falls on a tightrope in 1859. Dixon suddenly decided that he, too, could walk across it. He successfully crossed it twice, in 1890 and 1891, but tragically drowned in Wood Lake, Muskoka, in 1891. Ref. nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/ Joined: 1 stereoview on glass plate of Niagara Falls by James Thomson, 8 x 16.5 cm (broken glass). (42 pcs)
