George SAND (1804–1876). Autograph manuscript. Undated [1842]. 10 pp. in-8. Deletions, additions, and corrections. A beautiful, nearly complete text of Chapter LXXXII of Sand’s *Consuelo*, here transcribed (with the exception of the end of the very last sentence). The heroine, Consuelo, who is traveling in men’s clothing and under the name Bertoni in the company of Joseph, convinces the canon with whom she is staying to take in and raise the child of her rival, the singer La Corilla. However, Consuelo bid Joseph goodnight and retired to her room without giving him, as he had expected, the signal to depart for the return at dawn. She had her reasons for not rushing, and Joseph waited for her to confide them to him, delighted to spend a few more hours with her in that pretty house, living the pleasant life of a canon—a life that did not displease him. Consuelo allowed herself to sleep in and did not appear until the canon’s second breakfast. He was in the habit of rising early, having a light and delicious breakfast, soup, to stroll through his gardens and greenhouses to examine his plants, holding a breviary in his hand that he did not read, and to take a second nap while waiting for his main lunch [ ]. Only the last part of the last sentence of the text is missing: “The canon—he’s an eyesore! Give it to the poor; it will bring good luck to our poor Angèle.” Written in 1842, the year George Sand had a passionate affair with Frédéric Chopin, *Consuelo* was first serialized in the *Revue indépendante* and later published in bookstores. This novel traces the coming-of-age journey of Consuelo, a young opera singer who flees Venice and wanders from Italy to Bohemia, encountering along the way the madness and genius of music lovers, such as Joseph Haydn, with whom she will find success at the end of the novel. The present Chapter LXXXII is numbered 80 in Michel Lévy’s 1856 edition, Volume 3. A permanent export certificate will be issued with this lot.
