17TH-CENTURY PAINTER The Infant Jesus Within a Garland of Flowers Oil on canvas, 80x67 cm The garland of flowers in which sacred subjects are depicted is a motif of Flemish origin that later spread to Italy as well. In Rome, the earliest examples of this style can be attributed to Giovanni Stanchi and Mario Nuzzi, known as Mario dei Fiori. The canvas presented here appears to be the work of a French painter active within the Roman school and was created between 1660 and 1670. The quality is high. The artist who painted the Infant Jesus, however, was Italian; his figure is based on an Emilian model that circulated through a series of copies depicting the Infant Jesus (or Saint John the Infant) contemplating the cross.
