FRANCESCO BATTAGLIOLI Architectural Capriccios with Figures Pair of oil-on-canvas paintings, 39.5 x 54 cm Battaglioli was a true specialist in depicting landscapes, cityscapes, and above all, capriccios. His use of perspective is consistently of the highest quality, capable of evoking evocative scenic representations that are vivid in part due to his sensitivity to atmosphere and color, achieving decorative levels of remarkable visual impact. In 1778, Battaglioli inherited the chair of perspective at the Academy of Venice following the resignation of Antonio Visentini, crowning a career of undisputed success with a highly prestigious honor. Battaglioli, like many of his colleagues, was an artist of European stature; in fact, his presence in Madrid in the service of the Spanish Court is documented from 1754 to 1760. Battaglioli’s skill is well demonstrated by these two canvases, executed with mastery of both drawing and painting. Bibliography: D.
