PIERRE PAULIN (France, 1927–2009). For Artifort, the Netherlands. Pair of “Groovy” armchairs. Designed in the 1980s. Fully upholstered aluminum frame. Completely restored with new foam and high-end Dedar Milano fabric. Measurements: 63 x 84 x 68 cm. This pair of “Groovy” armchairs—also known as the “M” model (F598)—designed by Pierre Paulin for Artifort, represents one of the most iconic and sensual expressions of organic design from the late 20th century. Conceived in the 1980s, these pieces perfectly embody Paulin’s fluid and futuristic design language, where the seat becomes a continuous, enveloping, and almost sculptural form. Their low, undulating silhouette, designed to offer exceptional comfort, reflects the designer’s obsession with ergonomics and with transforming furniture into a physical experience. Pierre Paulin, renowned for his visionary interiors and his designs for the French cultural elite, succeeded in creating with the Groovy series a timeless model, as contemporary today as it was at the time of its creation. Pierre Paulin is one of the key figures in 20th-century French design, particularly renowned for his innovative creations from the 1960s and 1970s. In 1956, he joined Artifort, the firm with which he developed his most iconic and personal designs, characterized by organic forms and a strong focus on ergonomics. In the late 1960s, he collaborated with Le Mobilier National, participating in prestigious projects such as the renovation of spaces at the Louvre and the interiors of the French presidential residences. His designs—such as the “Mushroom,” the “Ribbon,” and the “Mariposa”—have become classics of contemporary furniture and are now part of international collections such as the MoMA in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
