JORDI VILANOVA I BOSCH (Rubí, Barcelona, 1925 – Barcelona, 1998). Set of six “Tiracord” chairs, designed in 1961. Beech wood with seats made of crisscrossed leather straps. In very good condition. Wood restored and leather straps replaced. Measurements: 83.5 x 41.5 x 47.5 cm (each). Designed in 1961, the “Tiracord” chairs are one of the signature pieces by Jordi Vilanova, a leading figure in the renewal of Catalan furniture design during the second half of the 20th century. Their design reflects the designer’s desire to reconcile the functionality and formal purity of modern design with Mediterranean artisanal tradition. The set features structures with straight lines and open backs, with seats made of crisscrossed leather straps that provide flexibility and a sense of visual lightness. The simplicity of construction and the absence of ornamentation reflect a Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic, reinterpreted through materials and solutions associated with traditional folk furniture. Jordi Vilanova was a Catalan designer, cabinetmaker, and interior designer, a pioneer in the modernization of Spanish domestic furniture. Trained at the Industrial School and the Llotja in Barcelona, he developed his own design language that combined Nordic influences with Mediterranean tradition. In 1960, he co-founded the La Cantonada group, and in 1964, he received the ADI-FAD Silver Delta Award for his “Delta” children’s stool. His work is represented at the Museu del Disseny in Barcelona, an institution that also preserves his professional archive.
