ADOLF LOOS (Czech Republic, 1870 – Vienna, 1933) redesign by BD. “LST1” table lamp. Nickel and opal glass. Measurements: 45 x 21 x 21 cm. Adolf Loos was one of the key architects and theorists in the transition to modernism. His critique of superfluous ornamentation, expressed in his famous essay “Ornament and Crime” (1908), helped define a new conception of space and the object, based on formal clarity, functionality, and the honesty of materials. BD Barcelona Design’s reissue of his historic designs is part of the effort to revive the legacy of the great masters of 20th-century design—an initiative the Barcelona-based firm has pursued alongside its own contemporary creations. Around 1910, Loos designed a set of lamps for the Villa Steiner in Vienna. The family of models identified as LST1, LST2, and LST3 includes table, larger, and floor lamp versions, respectively. The LST1 features an opal glass shade that diffuses light evenly and a metal frame with clean, understated lines. ADOLF LOOS was an Austrian architect, designer, and theorist, considered one of the great pioneers of modern architecture. He trained at schools of applied arts and studied architecture in Dresden before traveling to the United States between 1893 and 1896, an experience that had a decisive influence on his conception of modernity. His reputation was established in Vienna in the early 20th century thanks to projects such as the Café Museum (1899), the Steiner House (1910), and the Michaelerplatz building (1910). His legacy is represented in major museum collections, including the MoMA in New York, which houses furniture designs and glass objects; the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, which holds drawings and designs for interiors and furniture; and the Leopold Museum in Vienna, which houses lighting and furniture designs related to his work.
