LE CORBUSIER (La Chaux-de-Fonds, 1887 – Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, 1965), PIERRE JEANNERET (Geneva, 1896 – Thônex, 1967), and CHARLOTTE PERRIAND (Paris, 1903–1999) for Cassina. “LC1” armchair, also known as the “Fauteuil à dossier basculant.” Designed in 1928, produced in the 1970s. Chrome-plated tubular steel frame, seat and backrest in black-haired cowhide, and leather armrests. Features a facsimile signature by Le Corbusier and the reference “LC/1” engraved on the metal frame. It shows extensive hair loss on the seat cushion, as well as scuff marks on the leather armrests. Slight surface marks on the chrome-plated frame, consistent with its age and use. Measurements: 64 x 59 x 65 cm. The “LC1” model is one of the great icons of 20th-century rationalist furniture and one of the fundamental creations of the collaboration between Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand. Designed in 1928 and presented at the 1929 Salon d’Automne in Paris, it emerged from the trio’s research into ergonomics, industrial materials, and the adaptation of furniture to the needs of the human body. Its design reinterprets traditional colonial chairs through a lightweight structure of chrome-plated tubular steel, combined with flexible surfaces of leather and hide. The armchair is characterized by its tilting backrest, which allows the angle to be adjusted to the user’s posture, and by its suspended leather armrests. The construction reduces structural elements to the essentials, achieving a balance between geometric precision, comfort, and material expressiveness. This edition by Cassina—the firm that began authorized production of the model in 1965—preserves the fundamental characteristics of the original design, with its combination of chrome-plated steel and black-haired cowhide. Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand formed one of the most influential collaborations of the Modern Movement. Between 1927 and 1937, their joint research gave rise to iconic pieces such as the “LC4” chaise longue, the “LC2” and “LC3” armchairs, and the “LC1” itself, which transformed the concept of domestic furniture. Their creations are part of major international collections, including that of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, which houses a historic example of the 1928 “Fauteuil à dossier basculant” armchair.
